Penang Water Quality Profile
Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) sources and treats water from the Air Itam reservoir and Sungai Perai catchment area. Water quality at the treatment plant is generally excellent. However, George Town's UNESCO Heritage Zone presents a unique challenge: its historic pre-war shophouses and residential buildings frequently contain original cast iron and galvanized steel pipe systems dating back to the 1920s–1950s.
These corroded pipes leach iron, rust, and in some cases lead into water after it leaves the treatment facility — meaning perfectly clean supply water becomes contaminated before it reaches your tap.
Zone-Specific Recommendations
- George Town Heritage Zone: RO system mandatory. The age of internal building pipes makes lead and iron contamination a high-probability risk.
- Gurney Drive / Tanjung Tokong: Modern condominiums with relatively new plumbing — standard UF under-sink system suitable.
- Bayan Lepas / Batu Maung (Industrial Area): Outdoor master filter strongly recommended due to proximity to industrial water demand fluctuations.
- Butterworth / Seberang Perai: Different water source (Sungai Perai). Higher sediment load — outdoor pre-filter highly recommended.
