The Microscopic Difference
Both Ultrafiltration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) rely on hollow-fiber or spiral-wound membranes to strip tiny contaminants from water. The primary difference is the size of their microscopic pores:
- Ultrafiltration (UF): Pores are 0.01 microns wide. Removes bacteria, mud, rust, and macromolecules.
- Reverse Osmosis (RO): Pores are 0.0001 microns wide. Removes absolutely everything, including dissolved salts, heavy metals, and viruses.
Wastewater and Pressure
Because an RO membrane is so unimaginably tight, standard water pressure isn't enough to push water through it. RO systems require an electric booster pump. Furthermore, to prevent the membrane from clogging immediately, RO systems split the water into two channels—one for pure drinking water, and one to physically wash the rejected heavy metals down the drain as "wastewater" (usually a 1:3 ratio).
UF membranes operate at normal household pressure, require no electricity, and produce zero wastewater. All the water that enters the UF filter ends up in your glass.
Which Should You Choose?
If your local municipal water travels through aging lead pipes or has heavy dissolved solids (TDS), Reverse Osmosis is the only technology equipped to protect you. If your municipal water is generally safe and you just want to remove chlorine, bacteria, and rust while keeping healthy minerals intact, Ultrafiltration is the cheaper, greener, and more efficient option.
